I just had to share the details of the most amazing weekend getaway in Port Macquarie. My family and I headed there to support my brother, Gibson, as he competed in the Ironman race, and we were all super excited to have our cousin from San Diego join us for the fun!
We arrived late on Friday evening, and boy, were we in for a treat! The house we rented was not only spacious, but also packed with amenities like a pool and walking distance to the ocean. It was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy some quality family time.
Saturday was all about relaxation. We woke up to a breathtaking sunrise, and after a leisurely breakfast (my mum made us yum cha!), we swung by the Ironman competition venue with Gibson so he could drop off his bike and get a feel for the place. Later in the day, we headed out for some light kayaking. The water was so calm, and it was a fantastic way to soak in the beauty of Port Macquarie. We then headed back for dinner at the house and wrapped up the night early by watching some footy and playing board games.
Sunday was the big day, and we were all up bright and early, ready to cheer on Gibson as he started his swim at 7:18 am. It was incredible to see him power through the 3.8-kilometer swim, followed by a 180-kilometer bike ride, and finally, a 42.2-kilometer run. He finished in an amazing 12 and a half hours, and we couldn’t be prouder!
Throughout the weekend, we also enjoyed some of the awesome activities Port Macquarie had to offer. We went on beautiful hikes, exploring the lush rainforests, and got up close with the local wildlife. And of course, being the sports-loving family we are, we couldn’t resist playing some tennis matches. Our cousin brought his Californian energy to the games, making them even more enjoyable. It got so competitive, my dad even broke his shoe running for the balls.
As we packed our bags and said goodbye to the stunning Port Macquarie, we couldn’t help but smile, thinking about the unforgettable memories we had created. Not only did we get to bask in the sun and have a blast, but we also witnessed Gibson’s awe-inspiring Ironman achievement. He’s a true inspiration, reminding us all that with dedication and hard work, anything is possible.
